Arching shrub to about 7 m: fine indumentum on young
stems; very small stipules (to 3 mm) at nodes; leaves dotted
with many glands and a slight odour of oxalic acid in crushed
leaf; small amount of clear sap in petiole when squeezed.
Mixed disturbed forest. Soil on limestone.

Large fleshy herb 60 cm; flowers with 4 white petals & purple
stamens; green fruit. Collected in 70% isopropyl alcohol.
Steep-sided river valley with low canopy dominated by
Euterpe precatoria, Acalypha diversifolia, Alchornea latifolia
& Guarea macrophylla. Understory dominated by
Astrocaryum mexicanum. Thick leaf litter over granite.

South-facing roadside, in tropical evergreen, lowland, seasonal
broadleaf forest: Yucatan variant, frequently cut back and
disturbed. Growing in association with Leandra mexicana,
Clidemia capitellata, Clidemia hirta, Arthrostemma ciliatum &
Clidemia dentata.
Altitude: 100m
Red clay-based soil in floodplain of tributary to South Stann
Creek, granite bedrock with occasional limestone pockets.
Frequent herb up to 50cm, white flowers with deep pink anthers

Crescentia cujete, punctuated by Eleocharis marshes and
forest thickets. Partially burnt previous dry season, evidence
of human disturbance including numerous tracks (some old
others well used) and some rubbish dumping. ,

Belize: Stann Creek District, Cockscomb Basin Wildlife
Sanctuary, 2km E of visitors centre, along access road just
inside reserve.
£ 16° 47° 24" N 88° 26’ 32" W (WGS84)
South-facing roadside, in tropical evergreen, lowland, seasonal,
broadleaf forest: Yucatan variant, frequently cut back and
disturbed. Growing in association with Leandra mexicana,
Clidemia capitellata, Clidemia hirta, Arthrostemma ciliatum &
Clidemia dentata.
Altitude: 100m
Damp, open, sandy roadside edge.

Area. 600 m north of Hill Bank Field Station on the path to
Irish Creek. 19 m
17°36'29" N, 88°42'01" W
Herb 20-30 cm; flowers with five petals, dark pink at the
base. Low woodland with savanna species. Associated
species Acoelorraphe wrightii, Quercus oleoides and Ilex
guianensis. Herb growing at edge of clearing, in sandy soils
waterlogged at the time of collection.

Herb, uncommon. Stem square, quite succulent, hairy. Leaves and stem
red-purple (leaves green on upper surface, purple on lower). Flowers pink
purple, with 5 petals. 10 stamens with pink hooks and yellow anthers _

Medium dense pine savanna, trees ~5% canopy cover, up to 30
cm DBH & 10-12 m. 50 N/S slope from open savanna to
woodland, standing water from recent heavy rains. Occasional
Quercus oleiodes to 8 m, abundant Byrsonima crassifolia up to
2 m forms shrub layer, 20% shrub cover. 80% ground cover by
grass tussocks, 15-50cm in height with abundant Cassytha
filiformis. Strong evidence of burning.

Fls. lilac, darker towards their base; lower stem.
