Fruit a brown ovoid capsule to 0.6cm x 0.3cm. ROYAL BOTANIC GARDEN EDINBURGH E00318944 Flora of Sweden Ericaceae Rhododendron tomentosum (Stokes) Harmaja SWEDEN: Ostergotlands: St Vipph Island - southern end of the island. In Pinus sylvestris forest with a few individuals of Betula pendula and Sorbus aucuparia. Rhododendron tomentosum completely dominating understory - no other ground vegetation present. Shallow acid soils, which have formed in 'pockets' between extremely large rocks laid down at the end of the last ice age. 8 m. 57°32'0.6"N, 16°42'0"E. Layering and suckering shrub to 1m, lanceolate leaves with revolute margins, dark green above, the undersides and upper stems covered in very dense ferruginous indumentum. ‘Individuals’ very hard to distinguish. Picea abies, Sorbus aucupania and Betula pendula scattered. Ground vegetation dominated by R.tomentosum, with Vaccinium uliginosum subsp. uliginosum frequent throughout. ca 46 m. 59° 16' 58" N, 13° 53’ 56" E. Suckering shrub to 1 m tall, foliage generally restricted to the upper third of the stems. Linear leaves to 4cm long by 4 mm wide, strongly revolute, undersides and young shoots covered in a dense ferruginous indumentum. Current years seed ripening, old seed heads from last year persistent. Christian, T.
