Description: Small herbaceous, dioecious mesophyte to ca. 0.6m tall; stem terete, to 1.8cm in diameter; terminally ascending with crown of 10-30 spreading leaves; stolons absent. Leaves up to 80cm long; leaf blade narrowly elliptic, thinly leathery, adaxially mid to dark green with small darker blotches of somewhatmatt-velvety appearance, with sparse silky appressed haris, abaxially light green. Male infloresence comprising of 7 partial infloresences and terminal spike; peduncle and rachis ca. 27cm long; flowers scattered, solitary or in groups of 2-3 flowers, white. Female flowers maily solitary, occasionally in groups of 2. Ripe fruit a globosa single-seeded berry, 6-7mm diameter, ripening from bright green through red brown to semi-glossy black, pupl of ripe fruit soft, cream to brown, quickly oxidising when exposed, exuding strongly coloured brown juice when pressed.
