Habitat: Forest.
Description: Terrestrial herb. Rhizome stout. Leafy shoots to 15 cm apart, to 2.8 m long, raised c. 10 cm on dark purple stilt roots. Base to 5.5 cm diam., reticulate, orange-brown. Ligule to 2.6 cm long, bilobed, laterally extended to - clasp the pseudostem. Lamina sessile, to 63 x 16 cm, dark mid-green, velvety, thick, not plicate; beneath burgundy-red. Inflorescence from base, 13.5-27 cm long; spike 6-11 cm. Receptacle to 3.5 cm long in young inflorescence to 10 cm in infructescence, yellow. Bracts golden in centre with reddish margin. Fertile bract membranous, cream in lower 3/4, apex dark red; mucro spiny. Bracteole membranous, orange or cream with pink apex. Corolla pale pink; lobes darker pink. Staminal tube pale pink. Labellum pink with paler margin. Stamen pale pink. Stigma pink. Fruit cream, covered by persistent bracts. Centre of leaf base tasteless. Vernacular name: pacici (Duri langunage); fruit edible, leaves used for roofing of forest shelters.
