Habitat: Secondary forest.
Description: Terrestrial herb. Rhizome raised 20 cm above ground. Leafy shoots <10 cm apart, to 1.7 m long. Base 3.5 cm diam., covered by loose brown sheaths. Sheath reticulate, upper yellowish green. Ligule to 2 cm long, densely pubescent, emarginate. Petiole 0.5-1.5 cm long. Lamina to 54 x 14 cm, velvety dark green above, purple beneath. Inflorescence from base to 13 cm long, erect. Spike to 5.5 x 6 cm. Peduncular bracts brown. Sterile bracts reddish brown, spiny. Fertile bract reddish brown at base, pale in centre, almost black at apex. Bracteole membranous, faintly pale red in lower half, reddish brown in upper half. Calyx cream, apex pink. Ovary yellowish. Corolla tube white, lobes pale pink. Labellum pink. Filament white. Anther pale pink. Stigma dark purple. Fruit ovoid, reddish.
