Habitat: At edge of cocoa plantation, near small stream.
Description: Terrestrial herb in dense clump of many shoots. Leafy shoots to 10 cm apart; to 4.8 m long. Base to 8 cm diam., reddish brown. Ligule truncate, 5 mm long, hidden by clasping leaf base. Lamina to 110 x 20 cm; base acuminate. Inflorescence from rhizome, to 28 cm long. Peduncle to 12?20 cm long, only partly subterranean: upper part erect above the soil. Spike 7.5?15 x 5?10 cm, with 1?4 flowers open at a time, extending to 1.5 cm above bracts. All bracts orange-brown. Bracteole and calyx rigid, orange-brown. Ovary orange-brown. Flowers plain white. Infructescence to 32 cm long; head to 23 x 11 cm, narrowly ovoid. Fruit orange-brown pubescent, with a few warts at apex, bracts persistent. Eaten by rodents. Taste of centre of lower leafy shoot: pine-like.
