Habitat: Mayan ruins, rainforest
Description: Herb. Stem short, woody-like with scars of old leaves. Leaves waxy on the upper side, paler green on the under side. Young leaves with red hairs on the under side. Pedicel of inflorescences very long, bright dark pink and hairy. Male flowers with white petals and bright yellow stamens; female flowers with white petals, pinkish at the base, with bright yellow stigmas. Bracts pinkish.
Miscellaneous notes: Growing on one of the highest (37-40m height) ruin structures of a Mayan temple. Totally exposed to the sun. Plants very localised, forming a very visible population, dominant herbs. Few other scattered herbs growing in the area, in particular some Solanaceae.
