Habitat: Open forest.
Description: Terrestrial herb. Rhizome long-creeping (0.1-0.5 m between shoots). Leafy shoot to 3.5 m long, with 25 leaves. Base to 6 cm diam., green to reddish brown. Ligule to 11 mm long, greenish brown. Petiole 2.5 cm long. Lamina to 62 x 15 cm, not plicate, mid-green tinged - reddish below - especially when young; base auriculate: lobes to 1.5 cm long. Inflorescence flat-topped when young. Sterile bracts mucronate, spreading. Fertile bracts orange-red, purple-red at apex. Bracteole and calyx reddish brown. Corolla tube cream - lobes cream, purple-red in upper 1 cm. Staminal tube cream. Labellum pale yellow with a faint pinkish tinge. Stigma pink. Taste of central base: bitter, pine. Also seen at outer slope of Mahawu at 1275 m.
