Habitat: Open canopy 10 m in an area farmed within the last 30 years, on limestone bedrock.; Vegetation: Disturbed tropical, evergreen, broadleaf, seasonal, lowland forest dominated by Guazuma ulmifolia, Ficus maxima & Roystonia regia. Dense understory of Bactris major var. major, A. cohune & numerous vine.
Description: Common understory tree 3 m, protected fiercely by biting ants that live in the swollen thorns.
