Habitat: Secondary forest.
Description: Terrestrial herb. Leafy shoots 7-13 cm apart, to 2.5 m long. Base to 3 cm diam, reddish brown. Sheath yellowish brown with purple patches. Ligule 2-4 mm long. Lamina sessile, to 46 x 11 cm, mid-green, tinged reddish beneath. Inflorescence radical, 21 cm long. Peduncular bracts orange-brown, dark purple in upper half. Axis orange. Spike 3 x 3 cm, flat-topped. Bracts orange-brown, dark purple in upper half. Bracteole and calyx cream, apex reddish brown. Ovary golden pubescent. Corolla tube and staminal tube cream. Lobes cream except upper 5 mm with pink margin. Labellum cream with pink margin. Stamen and stigma cream. Infructescence chewed by animals but estimated to be c. 4.5 x 6 cm, globose. In less developed infructescence the fruit is 2.5 x 2 cm, dark reddish to black, toothed. Taste of the centre of leaf base: strong, like pine or resin.
