Description: Spreading herb, c.4 m tall, c. 50 leaves/stem, getting smaller towards apex, rhizome white, c. 1 cm diameter, rhizome sheath brown, leaf sheath swollen at base, reddish-green, leaves green both sides, ligule coriaceous, green, c. 1-1.5 cm long, infructescence arising from rhizome and from near base, c. 5 cm long, only one or a few fruits, fruits red, spiny, ovoid-ellipsoid.
