Habitat: On the edge of limstone outcrop, facing NW. Growing there with Taxus baccata and Ilex aquifolium co-dominant, with an understory including Sanicula europaea, Rubus sp., Rubia peregrin.. Plants growing here root directly into the rock and grow up, the Arbutus stems growning almost perpendicular to the 'cliff'. The other side of the road is entirely different, being a boggy area containing Betula and Sorbus spp. in what appears to be acid conditions; Aspect: NW; Geology: Carboniferous limestone.
Description: Large evergreen shrub/small tree, multi-stemmed, with stems protruding outwards almost perpendicular to the rock face on which it grows. Leaves to c.12cm long and 4cm wide with finely serrate margins, glossy mid-green above, lighter below, mid-rib and veins a yellow-green colour, upper surface of petioles tinged pink. Smooth, hair-free shoots, pinky-brown in colour on young growth, with bark on main stems rough and fibrous, peeling longitudinally.
