Habenaria ophiocephala W.W.Sm.
Type of Habenaria ophiocephala W.W.Sm.
Collector/Expedition: Kingdon-Ward, F.
Collection number: 3336
Collection date: 20th July 1919
Country/Territory: Myanmar
Collecting locality: Upper Burma, Laktang
Habitat: Epiphyte growing low down and therefore well shaded in the temperate rainforest
Description: Flowers white, except lower petals and spur and lower petals which are pale green
Miscellaneous notes: Remarkable palnt. The two stamens are widely separated by the large stigmatic area at the base of which is the entrance to the long sack-like spur. Honey is secreted at the base of the spur in large quantities. The spur is so long that no insects save butterflies and moths could get at the honey unless they went into the tube. One tube was bitten through at the base, another had a quarter of an inch of honey in it. Not common. Plants always solitary
