Miscellaneous notes: The 'maitan' seems to vary a good deal but only one species appears to be recognised by Philippi in Central Chile. Another is the species _Maytenus magellanica_ Hook. it has purple flowers, larger leaves. Vicuña Mackenna says 'the leaves of this tree present the phenomenon of an infinite variety of forms (de Córtes) in the same plant on account of which Don believes that there are many trees in the same plant. MacKenna recognises a _M. uncinatus_? - head inclined, appears somewhat like weeping willow.
