WILLIAM A. SETCHELL PROFESSOR OF BOTANY, EMERITUS LIFE SCIENCES BUILDING - ROOM 5598 UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA < Vanuary 28, 193% ‘ ‘ Sir William Wright Smith Director, : Royal Botanic Garden Hdinburgh, Scotland Near Sir Willianm:- I wrote you some several days since a letter of transmittal of the type specimen of Fucus cordatus Turner, so kindly loaned me sometime since from the herbarium of your Garden. Desiring to ernlose a photo-. graph of th specimen, I allowed it to lie on my table among my other letters. An accidental spark from a cigar lighter started a conflagration which involved this type specimen. Yortunately nothing was injured except the lower margin of the sheet. The specimen itself was uninjured. A portion of a penciled inscription, "Fucus cordatus Turner,” was burned off. The important inscription on the back, as to locality, was fortunately on the uninjured end. I am now returning the specimen, together with a photograph of the same, and am craving your indulgence for permission to publish a note in regard to it. I presume that the Garden will have no objection to my doing this. Regretting having damaged the specimen sheet, but rejoicing that nothing essential was damaged in the mishap to the papers on my desk, I remain, Most sincerely & gratefully,
