HOLOTYPE of Fucus costatus Menzies ex Turner,
Fuci 4: 72, pl, 226, 1819. [=Costaria costata
(C, Agardh) Saunders]
This is the specimen upon which Menzies based
his description and sketch, which Ww. J. Hooker
in turn used as the basis for pl.’226 in Turner's
Fuci. Assuming the date (1788) to be correct,
it was collected by Menzies while on board the
"Prince of Wales! during a fur-trading voyage of
discovery. Although details of this voyage are
scanty, it can be concluded that the provenance
of this specimen is either British Columbia or
Alaska (cf. C, F, Newcombe (ed.), Menzies' Journal
of Vancouver's Voyage, April to October, 1792,
Archives of British Columbia, Memoir 5: xiii-xv,
1923).
