Dear Mr. Magor,
i agree with you in looking upon the flowering
plant you sent me as something different from Rh. galac-
tinum (Wilson 4254). I have looked through our own
galactinums without finding anything like it. The com-
périson must be confined to the leaves as I have not seen
flowers of gélactinum. (I have no record of its flower-
ing yet - perhaps it has.) But the indumentum is quite
different. I would not put it with either the fFalconeri
Series or the Lacteum. The ovary is remarkable - neither
bristles nor glands.
It suggests to me more affinity with the set of
Grande. The indument rather favours that; it has a
very small calyx; the mortar-shaped flower; 14 stamens.
We must consider it as coming from Szechwan.
Now to my mind the only described Szechwan
plant comparable with it is Rh. Watsonii which from the
description in Plant. Wils. might almost pass for it but
as we have some material of Watsonii we know it is not
that species (assuming our Watsonii to be correct).

Wilson's nos. of Watsonii are 4251, 4244. This
would suggest proximity of area when 4254 is given to
galactinum.
For these reasons I would place it provisionally
as probably a new species of Grande section near Watsonii.
it may therefore have to get a distinct name. Have you
anyone you wish to commemorate? Or is it to have a name
such es 'advena', or ‘'peregrinum', suggesting a 'stranger'
or unexpected arrival? |
it would be satisfactory if an opportunity should
come for comparison with galactinum in flower.
Yours sincerely
