Portugal, NW: near Campia - Oliviera de Frades, "Mata do Cambarinho” , 40° 40'N 8° 12'. Shrubs or small trees to 3.5 m. Granitic soil with humus; north -facing; most plants at streamsides; with Calluna vulgaris, Erica arborea, Erica. sp., Genista tridentata, Ulex sp., Rubus sp., Pteridium aquilinum - common. A severe forest fire in August 1992 destroyed much of the vegetation, but the Rhododendron is strongly regenerating from the blackened stumps. Numerous plants scattered over quite a large area. The only other station in Portugal is at Monchique in the Algarve - cf the account in Flora Iberica vol. 4 (1993). Seed collected and leaves (in silica gel) for DNA analysis.
