Rhododendron ponticum subsp. baeticum (Boiss.&
Reut.) Hand.-Mazz.
Portugal, NW: near Campia - Oliviera de Frades,
"Mata do Cambarinho” , 40° 40'N 8° 12'. Shrubs or
small trees to 3.5 m. Granitic soil with humus; north
-facing; most plants at streamsides; with Calluna
vulgaris, Erica arborea, Erica. sp., Genista tridentata,
Ulex sp., Rubus sp., Pteridium aquilinum - common.
A severe forest fire in August 1992 destroyed much
of the vegetation, but the Rhododendron is strongly
regenerating from the blackened stumps. Numerous
plants scattered over quite a large area. The only
other station in Portugal is at Monchique in the
Algarve - cf the account in Flora Iberica vol. 4
(1993). Seed collected and leaves (in silica gel) for
DNA analysis.
Portuguese name: "Loendro”. 500-600m.
