Habitat: Open, shrubby vegetation.

Description: Terrestrial herb. Leafy shoots 10 cm apart, stilted up to 15 cm above ground. Shoot to 4 m long with up to 19 leaves. Base to 5 cm diam., reddish. Sheath yellow-green with red markings. Ligule short, orange-brown. Lamina sessile, to 70 x 14 cm, margin undulating. Inflorescence from rhizome, to 23 cm long. Peduncle to 17 cm long, scales orange-brown to reddish brown at apex. Spike to 6 x 6 cm, robust, mucilagenous. Fertile bract pale orange-brown in centre with dark purple margin. Bracteole pale red, membranous. Calyx pale pink with dark red apex. Corolla tube cream, lobes pale pink. Labellum pale pink. Stamen and stigma cream. Infructescence subglobose to 12 x 13 cm with 44-65 fruits. Fruit pyriform, angular, sides pale brown; apex depressed surrounded by soft spines, pale red. Centre of base of leafy shoot tastes hot and like pine.
