Habitat: Forest.
Description: Terrestrial herb in dense clump (7-10 cm between neighbouring shoots). Rhizome lifted by stilt-roots 10-20 cm above ground. Leafy shoot to 2.3 m long. Base to 4.2 cm diam., brown, reticulate. Sheath pale green. Ligule to 30 mm long, bilobed, brown. Lamina sessile, 58 x 14 cm, mid-green; beneath purple-brown (burgundy). Inflorescence from rhizome. Peduncle to 11 cm long, scales brown. Spike to 7.5 x 7 cm. Receptacle to 3 cm long, yellow. Bracts brown at base; red at apex. Fertile bract cream; brown at base; apex red, spiny. Bracteole transparent white, apex red. Calyx white, apex pink. Corolla tube white, lobes pale pink. Staminal tube white. Labellum pale pink, apex bilobed. Filament white. Anther pale pink. Stigma purple. Vernacular name: tikala (Kulawi language).
