(1817). — C. Vistanicus Herb. (1845). — C. sa- tivus L. var. Pallasii Maw, |. c. p. 171 (quoad pl. ital.) (1881); Fiori in Fl. Anal. d’It. I, p. 221 (1896). Loc. Apulia. — Proc. di Lecce: prope Tarentum (Taranto), loco dicto Leucaspide, in saxosis calcareis copiosissima, alt. 40-50 m. — 4-7 Nov. 1909. Oss. — 11 Crocus Thomasii 6 nativo del bacino dell’Adriatico e non oltrepassa la schiena dell’Appennino lucano verso occidente. La pianta della Dalmazia 6 identica con quelia italiana, ma ad oriente dei monti della penisola Balcanica é rimpiazzato dal vicinissimo Cro- cus Pallasit Goldb. Il Crocus Thomasii abbonda in tutta la provincia di Lecce. Ro- sano lo mandava a Tenore da La Terza, ed io lho osservato dal livello del mare Jonio, sul cosi detto Tratturo del Pantano, fin su nei boschi di Martina e San Basilio, i punti pil elevati della pro- vincia. In provincia di Bari é segnalato a Gravina (Scacchi in Herb. Ten.) ed a Ruvo (Palanza). Risale l’Appennino al Montocchio, alle Foje ed ai Poggi di San Michele, tutti nelle vicinanze di Potenza, ed al Pollino (Herb. Terracciano). Ma non scende, per quanto finora fu osservato, sul versante occidentale. Mi pare molto dubbia la loca- lita di Serra S. Bruno in provincia di Catanzaro, citata da Tenore e corredata da due esemplari monchi, dei quali uno esiste nell’erbario Gussoneano incorporato nell’erbario generale a Napoli, l’altro nel- lerbario di J. Gay, adesso a Kew. Il Prof. G. A. Pasquale, a ri- chiesta del Maw, si recd appositamente alla Serra, ma nonostante la sua espertezza e familiarita coi luoghi, non riusci a trovarvi altro che il Crocus longiflorus. Tl Crocus Thomasi?, come gid sospettava Parlatore (FI. It. III p. 288), differisce dal C, Pallasit Gold. della Crimea e della Bulgaria (com- preso il C. hybernus Friv. della Rumelia) pei fiori di color porporino pili carico, con vene meno evidenti, cioé, non distinte da diverso colorito, e con gola gialliccia, ma sovrattutto per le foglie coetanee coi fiori e negli esemplari Pugliesi per lo pit oltrepassanti questi. Nel C. Pallasii invece, come si pud osservare sugli esemplari ori- ginali dell’erbario di Pallas nel Museo Britannico di Londra, ed in tutti quegli altri provenienti dalla Crimea, le foglie appena spun- tano dalle guaine durante la fioritura. Non ho potuto vedere esem- plari vivi del C. Pallasii della Crimea, ma un bellissimo disegno a colori nell’Album di figure di Crocus di J. Gay. ora conservato a Kew, conferma che il colorito 6 di un violetto pallido con vene molto pit cariche, e quindi conspicue, e con gola bianca. Maw non figurd la pianta di Pallas (C. campestris Pall. —=C. Pallasi Goldb.) perché non l’ebbe mai in coltivazione. Le sue figure rappresentano soltanto le piante introdotte nel suo giardino da Leucaspide e dalla Dalmazia. Per riassumere, il Crocus Thomasii é una sottospecie geografica del C. sativus L. equipollente col C. Cartwrightianus, C. Elwesti e C. Pallasii, ma non identica con quest’ ultimo.
