Desiring to ernlose a photo-. graph of th specimen, I allowed it to lie on my table among my other letters. An accidental spark from a cigar lighter started a conflagration which involved this type specimen. Yortunately nothing was injured except the lower margin of the sheet. The specimen itself was uninjured. A portion of a penciled inscription, "Fucus cordatus Turner,” was burned off. The important inscription on the back, as to locality, was fortunately on the uninjured end. I am now returning the specimen, together with a photograph of the same, and am craving your indulgence for permission to publish a note in regard to it. I presume that the Garden will have no objection to my doing this.
