Lif HERBARIUM Ow 7 Iss 1. M: WAYWARD, F ) PRESENTED 1940. f Ee B es oa Ue Seis Abacatunr (as) Mase Gals. Pus) Lalas hubs ; [ protabey 1913, copyright reserved 2126 (2) C. striatum (Kras.) Murr in Deuts. Bot. Mon. xiv. 52, 1896. C. album, var. striatum Kras. Mitth. N. V. Steierm. xxx. 254, 1893. Probably brought into Hungary by the gipsies and considered by Dr Murr to be derived from the Indian C. rubricaule Schrad. Leaves oblong-lanceolate, obtuse, deep dark green, subconcolorous, strongly nerved; glomerules sessile in a dense, spicate inflorescence, forming a large, narrow panicle with erect branches. The British specimens have stout stems with alternate, reddish and green, vertical stripes. First record: Galashiels, Selk., I. M. H., September 1913. Found abundantly at the junction of the Gala and Tweed and at various places along the latter between Galashiels and Melrose, Roxb. Flowering September to November. Det. Dr Murr. At the Skin-works, Galashiels, Selk., Miss Hayward also found plants which are, according to Dr Murr, apparently hybrids of C. striatum, var. erosum and C. album (Rep. B. H.C. 334, (1913) 1914) and have the aspect of C. pseudo-borbasiforme ; others seem to be hybrids ' 4 ae 0) of striatum and album, var. lanceolatum, and others of striatum and ‘ hireinum, but not the same as C. Haywardiae. (See also under C. 4schackei.) Other specimens gathered by I. M. H. in September 1913 ROYAL BOTANIC GARDEN at Galafoot, Selk., were referred to x C. interjectwm (Murr in Mag. EDINBURGH | Bot. Lap. i. 369, 1902). See Aschers. & Graebn. Syn. v. 65; Allgem. _ Bot, Zeit. 25, 1914, and Rep. B.H.C. 333, (1913) 1914. Some plants with sub-simple leaves, found October 1913 by I. M. H., Dr Murr E00851911 . called forma integrifolia. These also occurred at Galafoot. |

C. slomerulosum, Reichb. Dust heaps, Twerton, North Somerset, September 1897. Seen also at Tewkesbury at an earlier date. Possibly not observed before in Britain. But like C. opudifolium, which is, with us, always on waste heaps in the west, it is probable . that this new form, when attention has been directed to it, will be | found to occur more frequently than at present appears. The name has been confirmed by Prof. Sagorski. Undoubtedly a segregate of the album group, from which it “does not differ in any character of fruit or seeds. But the habit, foliage, and inflorescence are distinctly marked. Usually a bushy plant of two to two and a half feet, with long, spreading branches. Stem stout, reddish, striate; foliage dull dark green; leaves long-stalked, mostly elliptic, entire, blunt, a few irregularly angled and toothed. Inflorescence of densely aggregated glomerules in shortly-branched spiciform panicles, leafy in bud, be- coming naked in fruit.—Jas. W. Ware. “Not the plant described by Reichenbach in the ‘Flora Excursoria’ (‘cinerascens . . . glomerulis minimis demum remotis’) [? which] must be supposed to be a hybrid (‘nicht die von Reichenbach . . . die hybrid sein soll.’). Judging by the ripe seeds, your plant, which is certainly remarkable for its closely conglobated inflorescence, belongs to the group of forms known as Ch. album, L., a. spicatum, Koch, ‘Syn.,’ p. 524. It is perhaps the true Cz. sevotinum which Linneeus records from England. But it is necessary to have the stem-leaves for comparison, and these you have not sent me. It is not one of the varieties of Ch. album which have been recently distinguished by Krasan.”—J. Freyn. (See ‘Journ. Bot.,’ 1898, p. 149.) ‘‘ Herr Freyn names plants collected by me near Oxford as long ago as 1892, C. album, \.., var. glomeru- losum (Reichb.), forma viridis, nec cinerascens. I should like Herr Freyn to see more specimens of Mr. White’s plant.”—G. C. Druce. FLORA ofr BRISTOL. Chte ee Locality— Butea, Lucertow North Car, hg7 Collected by JAMES W. WHITE, ZZ.S.
