Kerry: Killarney: Muckross Peninsular; SW of Reenadinna wood, on the S side of the road leading out onto the peninsular from Muckross House. 27 m. 52°01'03"N, 9°31'17"W. Large evergreen shrub/small tree, multi-stemmed, with stems protruding outwards almost perpendicular to the rock face on which it grows. Leaves to c.12cm long and 4cm wide with finely serrate margins, glossy mid-green above, lighter below, mid-rib and veins a yellow-green colour, upper surface of petioles tinged pink. Smooth, hair-free shoots, pinky-brown in colour on young growth, with bark on main stems rough and fibrous, peeling longitudinally. On the edge of limstone outcrop, facing NW. Growing there with Taxus baccata and Ilex aquifolium co-dominant, with an understory including Sanicula europaea, Rubus sp., Rubia peregrina. Plants growing here root directly into the rock and grow up, the Arbutus stems growning almost Perpendicular to the ‘cliff. The other side of the road is entirely different being a boggy area containing Betula and Sorbus spp. in to be acid conditions. 2 \ ROYAL BOTANIC GARDEN EDINBURGH Christian, T. Locality: Republic of Ireland. County Kerry: Killarney. Muckross Peninsular; on the northern shore of Muckross Lake, growing out of limestone outcrop at the top of the ‘cliff above the lake, west of ‘Colleen Bawn Rock’. 51°00’57 " N, 09°31’53 "E. Alt. 26 m. Habitat: Taxus/lex/Arbutus woodland along the northern shore of Muckross Lake, in very shallow soils over Carboniferous limestone. The canopies of plants on the shoreline overhanging the water and exposed to high light levels. Description: Single-stemmed tree c.8 m tall, 40 cm dbh. Leaves to 12 cm long x 4 cm wide with serrate margins, glossy mid-green above, lighter beneath, with the upper surface of petioles tinged pink. Collector: T.
