Linnée et les anciens auteurs ne connaissaient que lA. cepa _ cultivé, c’est pourquoi les nombreuses variétés établies par eux représentent les différentes races cultivées de cet oignon. L’A. cepa sauvage fut connu par Boissier et Regel, et ce dernier le décrivit comme var. sylvestre. _ Je conserve cette variété, quoique les différences indiquées par Boissier et Regel ou ne sont pas constantes, comme par exemple la grandeur des ombel- Jes et l’épaisseur de la tige, ou se rencontrent aussi sur certaines races cultivées, comme par exemple la forme de la bulbe et la couleur de ses tuniques, parce que je compte conforme au but de séparer l’A. cepa sauvage comme une race particuliére. Le monographe de l’A. cepa cultivé indiquera sonrang taxonomique et sa différence des races cultivées de l’A. cepa; peut- étre trouvera-t-il convenable de la séparer comme espéce particuliére. De mon cété, j’indiquerai que l’A. cepa sauvage de |’Asie Moyenne est en général plus robuste (la tige jusqu’a 150 cm. de hauteur, les feuilles jusqu’a 4 cm. d’épaisseur) que le cultivé et a cependant plus souvent les ombelles compa- rativement plus petites (env. 5 cm.). Regel (AHP. X, p. 315 in and.) écrit: ,,.Das Vaterland des A. Cepa ist mithin der Caucasus, Westturkestan, Afghanistan und die hohen Gebirge Ostindiens“. Ici il omet, on ne sait pas pourquoi, la Perse et le Beludshi- stan surlesques il écrit plus haut. Je ne doute pas qu'il n’y ait pas de lA. cepa sauvage au Caucase (comp.: Auncxufi. Da. Kasx.; QDomun u Bopo- Hos. Onpeg. pact. Kppima u Kasx.; Tpoccrefim. Da. Kask.); sa_croissance en Afghanistan, Beludshistan et en Inde exige d’étre confirmée: Boissier ne cite pas les exemplaires de l’Afghanistan de Griffith, que Regel mentionne, et Hooker ne place lA. cepa que parmi les oignons cultivés de |’Inde; sa croissance en Perse n’est pas douteuse. En Asie Moyenne I’A. cepa sauvage est connu du Tian-Schan occi- dental (Mogol-tau!!), Pamir-alaj (monts d’Alaj!, la vallée du Zeravschan!, Ku- itang!, Pistali-tau! et Kopet-dag!!.I] habite dans les fentes des rochers cal- plus rarement sur les pentes pierreuses.
