Abutilon Theophrasti Medik. (A. Avicennae Gaertn.). Origin: 21, Middlesex ; grown from seed obtained by D. H. Kent from the factory of Soya Food Lid., at Harefield, in spring, 1947, September 16th, 1947. This species was plentiful in the forecourt of the factory in the previous year but very little material was accessible. Members may therefore be glad of well-grown cultivated specimens. This Asiatic species hag long been in cultivation and is now a widespread weed in Europe, North Africa, Australia and North America (where it is known as “ Velvet Leaf ’’ and ‘Indian Mallow ”). From other plants determined from the Harefield factory it is believed that the soya in use in 1946 /7 came from Oregon, U.S.A., and the commonness of A. Theophrasti in cotton and other fields in the eastern United States supports this theory. It is pf interest to note that the specific names refer to the belief of some of othe early botanists that the plant was the golden Althaca of Theophras- | tus.—J. E. Loustey. copyright reserved
