Habitat: frequent in a poor seed year with good seed only at the base of one plant, in sun on dry gravelly light soil over sedimentary rock on a very steep east facing alpine mountainside dominated by Yushania niitakayamensis, with scattered Juniperus squamata, Berberis morrisonense, and Rosa transmorrisonensis,
