Habitat: growing in dense Rhododendron thickets on very steep cliffs on the sheltered side of the glen
Description: A big shrub 10-15ft; The leaf-bud-scales are persistent, giving a curious effect. The outer bark sloughs, exposing a smooth copper-red surface.
Miscellaneous notes: Though the specimens seen were many years old, as proved by the number of annual growths they bore no fruits.
